Sustainability became a familiar word based on the UN’s campaign for sustainable development. Hence, the most popular definition of sustainability is derived from the UN World Commission’s definition of sustainable development as quoted: “sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”Thus, the word sustainability tends to instigate the thoughts of environmental protection, reducing carbon emissions, renewable energy/fuel sources, and balancing the ecosystems of the earth.

Meanwhile, sustainability is broad and encompasses the process of protecting the natural environment, human and ecological health and increased innovations without prejudice to lives either now or in the future.It supports the ecological systems, human lives, economic growth and social developments. Therefore, sustainability balance between, economy, environment and social life or equity.

Sustainability also presumes a conservative approach to using resources, prioritising the long-term goals and keeping in mind the consequences of how the resources are used. Simply put, sustainability does not concern itself only today, but the world we leave for next generations.

The process of achieving sustainability is further broken down into 

include economic development, social development and environmental protection. This also applies to the cooperate world where it can be rephrased as social, economic and environmental impacts of the organisation’s activities or informally referred to as people, planet and profits.

There are many approaches to discussing the factors that influence achieving sustainability. Some schools of thought highlight the factors to be optimising of current fossil fuel usage, eliminating waste, recycling, recovering energy, saving time and reducing or eliminating pollution. These are targeted toward manufacturing companies. The six factors we will focus on are

What is sustainability?

Funny to say that our environment is not left out in the cliche "garbage in, garbage out". Meaning that we get back whatever we give to it. If we garbage contaminants on the soils, we will end up eating contaminated plants. If for instance, we also garbage pollutants in the air, we will breathe in the pollutants. The environment includes the soil, air, plants, surface and groundwater bodies and their present state are what we made of them. Hence, they are solely our responsibilities. We encourage you to make a choice today to be responsible for good health and wellbeing by being intentional about what you garbage into the environment. Be deliberate about your waste disposal!

Employees’ or citizens’ welfare should be prioritised.

While most focus will be on money, profit or economic development, access to sustainable products without compromise to life should be achievable, especially in developing countries. Sustainable economic development, therefore, includes providing incentives or reducing the financial burden of practising sustainability. for businesses, economic development means increased income but also include compliance, proper management or governance, and risk management. Through sustainable strategies, companies can survive or counterweigh the extreme measure of adopting sustainable practices. An example of such measure is abandoning fossil fuels or chemical fertilisers instantly rather than making changes to them.

This includes the protection of the ecosystems, air quality, sustainability of natural resources, pollution prevention and low carbon emissions. For businesses environmental protection involves reducing carbon footprints, reducing and recycling waste, reducing water usage, decreasing the number of materials used in packaging, having a sustainable source of raw materials and reducing or eliminating activities of negative environmental impacts.

This can be said to be the natural conditions in which people, animals and plant lives. The environment is also involved in the use of natural products and energy.

We make use of our environment to grow crops, to obtain water, to harvest wood, to also produce energy. Things that make up our environment which are sometimes referred to as environmental media includes soil, air, water, plants and even humans. Meanwhile, if the environment is not sustainable, it will lead to further degradation.

How can we manage these natural resources in the environment in other to protect them from pollution and degradation

? There are many different ways to use the environment sustainably. Some of these are:

Renewables can produce energy indefinitely, unlike non-renewable energy sources, which are eventually used up. Renewable energy also typically produces less pollution than non-renewable energy. Examples of Renewable resources include biomass energy (such as ethanol), hydropower, geothermal power, wind energy, and solar energy. In our homes if possible, consider powering your home using renewable energy to reduce the number of carbon emissions you produce. Replacing your petrol or diesel-fueled car with an electric one would also help to achieve this!

By growing your fruit and vegetables, you can ensure you're not using pesticides that will contribute to water and air pollution. This will also help to reduce the number of fossil fuels used to transport produce to supermarkets, buying expensively instead of saving. You can also practice soilless farming which enables us to plant at our sustainability in our home with the aid of grow bags, substrates, nutrients, water and varieties of seeds.

Why should we sustain our resources in the environment?

We should manage the resources in other to avoid environmental issues such as pollution and climate change, which cause harm to the environment, wildlife and humans. Also, by making some small changes to your lifestyle, you can reduce your carbon footprint and help to tackle these issues.
